On June 7, 2010, I temporarily suspended my freelance paralegal business to assist Attorney Alan S. Acker who was appointed Judge of the Franklin County Probate Court in Columbus, Ohio
by Governor Ted Strickland. A vacancy occurred on the bench of the Franklin County Probate Court upon Judge Eric Brown's appointment as Chief Justice of
the Ohio Supreme Court by Governor Ted Strickland, as a result of Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer's death on April 2, 2010.
I joined Judge Acker as he transitioned to his new office with the
Probate Court and assisted with his campaign to retain his seat.
Coming into the Court with over 25 years of probate experience, I was surprised by how little I knew about the
day to day operation of "the front office". I became Judge Acker's "gatekeeper". I controlled his Court docket and his personal calendar and no one was allowed to see the Judge without getting past me first.
I had the privilege of working with the Magistrates and staff of what the Judge and I
consider the best Probate Court in the State of Ohio.
I attended weekly meetings with the Judge and Magistrates and status conferences with
counsel in chambers and was trusted to take notes and/or digitally record proceedings.
While our law clerks were studying for the bar exam during the month of July, I served
as the Judge's bailiff in the courtroom and observed our justice system in action.
I also provided input into the revamping and updating of the Court's website, letterhead
and business cards and worked with the Judge and staff to develop a new logo for the Court.
In addition to working full-time with the Court, I spent many hours walking in parades, distributing campaign
literature and being a cheerleader for "my" Judge because I felt so strongly that he was the right choice for "our" Court.
It was an incredible, once in a lifetime learning experience and I am so grateful to Judge Acker for the privilege
of allowing me to participate in the process with him. I so enjoyed having the opportunity to work side by side
with the Judge, Magistrates and staff of the Probate Court. I gained greater insight, respect and appreciation for
each of their positions and learned to look at matters from their viewpoint, as well as a practitioner before their Court.
Unfortunately, the November 2nd
election results were not in our favor and I am returning to my home office in Delaware to jump start my freelance paralegal business again. I look forward to strengthening my business
relationships with the lawyers I have worked with in the past, as well as generating new business with the attorneys I met and worked with while employed by the Probate Court.
